About Old Time Radio Performer Phil Harris

The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show was the show that made Phil Harris a household name in old time radio.

Phil grew up in Nashville, TN and was born in Indiana. Starting out in the 1920s as a drummer, he later went on to start his own band the following decade.

His career transcended many areas including the film industry. In 1933 he made a filmed called So This is Harris for RKO. It ended up earning an Academy Award for best live action short subject.

A few years later, in 1936, Harris became the musical director for the Jack Benny Show. The band had him as their lead and he also sang. But he also had a speaking role as a comic Southern character. It was at this time that he became as well known for his comedy as for his musical talent. It wasn't long before he recorded musical numbers too, using a varied mix of musical styles to help his music get noticed and stand out from the crowd.

He would eventually marry Alice Faye in 1941, and would continue to be married to her for over 50 years. While it was the 2nd marriage for the couple, they knew in each other that this time they found the right person. Soon enough, the two joined the Fitch Bandwagon.

The show's original concept was a focus on swing music, but Phil and Alice became successful in their own right and so the show became their own, the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show.

This version of the show was a comedy that featured one song from the couple each episode. The show was incredibly popular and ran for six years. 1954 was when the show finally broadcast its last show. By this time, the dawn of TV shows was on the up, which was why many old time radio shows were quickly going.

Harris maintained his musical career connection long after the original radio show ended. He made television appearances and did voiceover work including the voices of Disney characters Baloo in the Jungle Book, Thomas O'Malley in the Aristocats, and Little John in Robinhood.

Later on in his life, Harris gave back to the communities in which he grew up, with donations to students of Linton (his hometown) and Palm Springs, where he spent much time as a young adult. To this day, his donation of memorabilia to the Linton Public Library has been maintained as a piece of history. He died of a heart attack in 1995 at 91 years of age. His wife Alice lived another 3 years after his death.Phil Myre NHL Goalie 1969-1983
